  5.     With calculated harshness, the Italian government resorted to
  6. drastic measures in dealing with more than 18,000 impoverished
  7. Albanian refugees in the southern port of Bari. Seeking escape
  8. from the dismal conditions back home, the Albanians had fought
  9. their way ashore after crossing the Adriatic on grossly
  10. overcrowded boats, only to be penned into coal docks and the
  11. local soccer stadium without adequate food or water. The angry
  12. men and women then proceeded to wreck the stadium. Later, when
  13. supplies did arrive, complained a Caritas relief worker, "the
  14. police threw food at them like in a zoo."

  16.     After battling security forces for two days and suffering
  17. from exposure, most of the dispirited Albanians willingly got
  18. on board more than 50 military and Alitalia flights headed for
  19. Tirana. Altogether, said Interior Minister Vincenzo Scotti,
  20. 17,466 had been shipped home by last week. But a few hundred
  21. holdouts, including army deserters, have been allowed to stay
  22. while an Italian commission decides whether they qualify for
  23. political asylum.
